@andrewrobinson2565 Finland had almost no preparation for invasion before winter war, no tanks, no air force to speak of and shortage of even basic weapons. After that obviously things have changed but a lot had to happen at a moments notice and very little training in 1939. What obviously helped was fact that people knew some basic skills like skiing and hunting from civil life. Many don't have those skills anymore nowadays, so excellent opportunity to teach them exist with conscription besides other basic skills like first aid, navigation, protection against chemical and nuclear fallout, having discipline, paying attention to detail and following orders when your life depends on it etc.
I looked it up, there is 0 usage of any term related to emasculation from me before you bringing it up, so you must be imagining things or perhaps projecting your own insecurities.
What you would do at 62 has not much to do with the question: is conscription in general necessary or useful. If every 20 - 50 year old could simply choose to be an interpreter then we could simply surrender at the first sign of trouble and live under whatever dictator threatened us first.
Historical reasons don't apply today, there is no reason to be a freeloader because of something that happened decades ago. If necessary Austria can change their laws and even constitution. Sweden was neutral for about 200 years, yet it is joining NATO right now and Finland should have never been neutral to begin with after ww2 but it was forced to do it because of realities of it's neighbor. I have personally always advocated for Finland joining NATO already many decades ago as clear majority of officers in the Finnish army have agreed with this for ages including ww2 veterans.
