@milkywaydragon If the thing is big enough to be a wolf and not immediately recognizable as a dog, I don't think many ranchers would first think of petting it. I wouldn't try to pet it even if I knew it was a dog, they can have rabies and bite when you don't expect it. Common sense is to get the gun at first sight of large enough animal that can possibly be dangerous.

@thisnthat7760 More likely fiction is much more strange than truth. Every sane person would get a gun on first sight of a wolf near their property and a wolf isn't just going to stand there taking hits from a 357 unphased. This is just a total fantasy story.
