@Budd631 punishing crime in general does lower the crime rate. Harsh sentences for all violent crimes. It brought down crime in the 90s at its peak, and the data shows that the average homicide perpetrator has had 12 violent crimes committed prior. Allowing them no cash bail, the ability to have light sentences puts a huge cost on society. The average economic cost is roughly 10k more to have them free then walking the street for the increased damage it causes. Those numbers don’t take into account the emotional toll on victims, and the death of communities and lower quality of life of those communities because businesses won’t invest, and ones that are there pull out. Studies in general show that higher punishments lead to lower crime rates, it’s a simple incentive analysis. People on the margins are more likely to commit crimes when punishments are lower. @PointingLasersAtAircraft how about criminals shouldn’t run. How about individuals should take responsibility for their actions. If you go on high speed chase, and get people killed. You should be jailed for life, or executed. By even choosing to do that we already know the individual has a net negative value to society.

Shania Van der Halen what am I incorrect about? I have looked through FBI data on crime, and the CDC data relating to crime and death. Please identify what I am in forever about. Please present relevant information and make a case. Just saying incorrect means and proves nothing.

“Got caught up with the wrong people. That made him do it. Once you’re in and couldn’t get out situation”. Why are you letting your kids run with gang members? Where was the father? It’s time to stop glorifying single motherhood. Lack of male energy and physical ability to stop a growing boy that’s bucking has consequences. This is the mothers fault for not keeping her boy from this life. It is his mothers fault for not putting him in a situation to succeed. Ironic, the grandmother talks about accountability. It was those older kids. Where is the mayor. Your kid had an ankle bracelet for conducting crimes. This whole speech, not once did she say my daughter and I failed. That’s the main problem. Secondary to that is that people aren’t getting punished. The grandma was right about that. But I have a question, who did she vote for? Who did all the people who run the news station and cover this story? I’m guessing, and she can correct me if I’m wrong, that it was the people that want soft on crime policies. How is that working out?

He points out that more black and brown children fail at higher levels because their talent is mismatched with the institution because they routinely accept lower test scores. The schools generally accept these students, they show up, take out debt and then flunk out or leave at much higher rates. They get used as a mascot to be seen on campus for their time there. The information that tests disproportionally hurt the poor is false. It’s been demonstrated that how well kids do on exams is linked to average hours studied in the topic. White students typically study double blacks, and Asians double whites. Many first generation Asian families are very poor but quickly rise out of poverty by placing a premium on education. If you want to help kids, raise the standard, force them to meet it. Then they will be prepared for the world. Thomas Sowell has data about that as well, and he has his personal story of being pushed hard in Harlem because the teacher knew poor kids didn’t need you feeling bad for them, they needed the hard standards even more then rich kids.

Parent kids, this means hours of coming and going, knowing where they are, having two parents in the household, and discipline. Stop electing people that go light on criminals. Letting less then 5% of your community terrorize the other 95% is insane. The majority of law abiding citizens our letting the minority of repeat violent criminals run their communities. Advice to the mother with the son with an uzi in his bag. Put him in a military academy. If he is this far down the path, it will save his life. The change in laws to not punish youth was obviously going to happen. Thomas sowell referred to this as stage 1 thinking. You think of an idea, and say that would be nice and stop there. But instead, think about the incentive structure that sets up. In this case it would clearly incentivize older gang members to actively and aggressively recruit more youths into gangs because of light or no deterrents. Move beyond stage one.
