The training camp and its predecessor institution, Escuela de las Américas, founded in 1946, were attended by more than 60,000 Latin American military personnel. Until 1984 it was in the Panama Canal Zone. The school is connected to the dirty wars of US-backed South American military dictatorships and the associated oppression of broad sections of the population, especially in the 1970s and 1980s.
