  1. I know for a fact that I have slave owners in my history. Learning that didn't make me feel bad. It made me understand that we need to keep moving forward. Yes, I feel bad that people in the past were treated badly, but not that I was specifically culpable in that evil. And history should be discomforting, it should make you feel bad about the mistakes and cruelty of the past, so you learn not to repeat them. It is the heat and the hammer that forges strong steel. Anyone trying to revise history or teach mythology in its place is condemning children to suffering and failure, and that hurts a lot more than a few anxious moments learning of genuine history.
