There's a psychological theory that the reason these people would work so hard to get rid of things they publicly attack but privately do or have done is like trying to run up the score on the scoreboard. They have a gay relationship, in their circles that's bad and one point against them. Then they go up and create legislation or demand certain books be removed all about homosexuality, their score is now one point against them and ten thousand points for them. They don't see it as hypocrisy, they see it as being more in favor of their talking points than their personal foibles.
