There was a time, before Upton Sinclair's The Jungle and the formation of the FDA, where butchers would take rotten meat, grind it up, mix boric acid (borax) into it to take away the smell along with some coloring, and sell the result as ground meat or put it into sausages. That was poisoning people twice. Once by the ingestion of rotten meat and again by the ingestion of a toxic chemical used for cleaning laundry. Don't tell me business care about consumers, they care about their bottom line. PERIOD!
