People who are on the authoritarian left don't believe that anyone on the right will ever get the ability to declare any form of speech as hate speech.  They believe that their in-group is ultimately correct in all ways and inherently moral and that the right is ultimately wrong and inherently immoral.  But, power shifts, the left will inevitably lose control of the government, if only temporarily, and the right will then take up the tools that the left were holding.  It's best to have a universal standard outside of political ideology that is equally applied to everyone, which is why we have the first amendment.  The extreme right doesn't like free speech any more than the authoritarian left does which is why it needs to be defended against the extremes on both sides, for our good and their own good too.  Bravo to the University of Chicago for being an adult in this climate of stupid intolerance and childish behavior.
