Those who do not learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them.  Our flowery childhood explanation of how America came to be talked about the Pilgrims leaving England because they couldn't practice their religion their way.  They came to the New World to make this a nation free to practice any religion.  That's bullshit of course, at least the second half.  They did leave because they were unable to practice their religion their way, but then they established a colony with an officially sanctioned and codified religion, and not practicing that religion was heresy and punishable.  It was Rhode Island that had the first form of the freedom of religious practice, and it was founded by a Baptist minister.  Thomas Jefferson lamented that Virginia had an official religion and wanted that to change.  It's why he wrote the First Amendment in the first place.  Pat Robertson is quite hell-bent on taking us back up that path to a point where people were allowed to hang heretics and burn witches.  He's a relic of a bygone era and, quite frighteningly, he's resurrecting this philosophy, and it's destroying us as a people.  Like I said, doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past.
