You can't say you were effective in stopping a terroristic group and in the same breath say that they grew more heads and became harder to fight, not with any credibility. I think we'll eventually evolve past war, but it's going to be hundreds if not thousands of years and many generations. A lot of ideologies need to be taken away, and that's not easy, because ideas don't die as long as there is one person to hold that idea. Nothing short of blockading a problem region with a massive number of troops and materiel, well more than the US alone can provide, will really do this. If we pull away, bad people will come it and do a lot of nasty things, but that might paradoxically stabilize the region, make things easier on down the road.
