This is THE problem with common sense. It's common to believe that paying a union dues from your own wages means you'll have less money. Some things are counterintuitive. You might have to pay a few dues, but what you get out of that is far more value for your remaining wages. You spend less on health care, get more paid vacation and sick leave. You get less stress at work because conditions are safer and more functioning for you as a worker. Then there are retirement benefits, meaning you still get paid when you stop working. All in all, you might take home a few less dollars, but the ones you do take home go a lot further.
