When I was a kid back in the 80s, we had to memorize the multiplication table in the second grade. I failed to and wasn't allowed to go to the pizza party with the kids who did. I wasn't alone, but I also didn't get pizza! I've long since learned them, though for long math problems I still use a calculator.
