This is why I've said for quite a while now that a marketplace is a terrible place to subject the validity or quality of an idea. People buy things they KNOW are bad for them. People buy things they want to use to harm others. People buy things that can harm themselves or others unwittingly. People can be sold things they didn't want until a slick salesperson hocked it. To subject an idea's validity or quality to how well it fares in a medium so easily corrupted and so easily perverted, you are ensuring the worst ideas get ahead. That's why we're in so many predicaments. Global warming hoaxers, extremism, religious ideology, they're all being pushed to the forefront despite being easily shown as terrible. The most egregious part of The Marketplace of Ideas is that it falls to the most easily discredited logical fallacy, Argumentum Ad Populum. Things aren't good ideas because people believe them, they're good because they're true. And I get it, the idea here is that the good ideas, the true ideas will eventually be the ones that win in the marketplace. Yeah, and McDonalds is quality food because it's the biggest fast-food seller in the world.
