I think that, while we CAN fix this mess, we WON'T. Not because it's unimportant, not because we're unaware of the problem, but because, in the marketplace of ideas, lies perpetrated by the wealthy elite in the fossil fuel industry, bolstered by governments and apologists, gets bought by more people than the truth. It's why I never trust the marketplace of ideas, people buy snake oil over real science ten to one.
