This is what I've been saying is wrong with our primary system. We have a very public, very ugly pre-election election to determine who we will run in the main election. It's counterproductive. People rally behind one candidate and a non-zero number of them, when their preferred candidate fails to win the primary, either sit home (most likely) during the election or vote for the opposition candidate as a form of revenge against the person who won the primary (least likely).
