  1. Groceries chains have ZERO liability when it comes to donating food that turns out to be bad in some way. If it makes someone sick because it's spoiled, for example, they are protected by Good Samaritan laws. Furthermore, our labelling laws when it comes to expiration dates is almost 100% meaningless. For example, on a Hostess brand fruit pie (the small hand-sized), the expiration date doesn't mean unsafe to eat after X date, it means the crust will no longer be crisp. Only baby formula has a hard and fast expiration date due to safety concerns. They actually know this too. This is just a conservative smoke screen to protect them from public backlash for being evil.
