The only confirmed news story I could find about Halloween candy being poisoned was a father who did it to his own kid. These stories were around when I was a kid, they were around when my mom was a kid, it's never been a real thing, it's always been a terror tactic from people trying to make you afraid.

Hell, giving out one individual pill to kids would be expensive as hell. Imagine giving out even a small fun-size bag with like twenty to kids! This talking point made the rounds when cannabis edibles started being sold that looked like popular candies. The danger with those is a kid finding their parents' edibles and eating those, not someone spending hundreds of dollars to give them out as a goof.

@Richard_Nickerson Fear overrides logic in most people. What is usually perfectly obvious, like drug dealers wanting to make money and killing kids stops that, is pushed to the side by some because, "someone wants to hurt my babies!" That's why it's so important to not just hear a story and believe it, you have to stop and think like you and I are doing here.

@Richard_Nickerson I'm suddenly reminded of the old comedy trope where someone says, "gimme ONE good reason..." then the other person makes an exhaustive list to which the first person replies, "you don't listen well, I said ONE reason!" You're right, of course, just showing where my brain takes me sometimes.

By the way, what kid ever throws something colorful in their mouths and just swallows without tasting? A kid is going to be fentanyl in their mouth and it's going to taste like aspirin or something like that. Bitter, gross, and spit it out. If it has a gelatin coating, most won't taste anything and then bite into it, get the nasty bitter taste of medicine and spit it out. My brother as a kid once got into my mom's pills and they needed to pump his stomach, but he was 3! A ten-year-old doing the same is VERY unlikely.
