  1. Why is calling someone retarded insulting to people with Downs syndrome? It's insulting to the person being called retarded. People with Downs syndrome can't help that their intellectual faculties are impaired. In fact, people with Downs syndrome try very hard to understand the world around them, harder than most people who aren't cognitively impaired. You're not protecting them one iota by banning one word. When I was a kid I saw Retarded replaced with "special needs," only for that to then become an insult. We keep screwing around with language to try to protect the feelings of people instead of giving them the tools to deal with their feelings. Biggest burn (insult) I ever saw was in middle school when one kid was teasing a girl with Downs, calling her a retard, and she said, "I can't help being a retard, I was born this way. What's your excuse?" She was given the tools to be more emotionally mature than the kids picking on her, and after that, they stopped picking on her and started treating her like a person.
