There was a point in our nation's history where you could only vote if you owned land. The idea being, that because you have a vested interest in keeping your land and property that you would research the candidates and, hopefully, elect someone who had everyone's best interests at heart. It's proven to be incorrect, but I am starting to wonder if they didn't have a point. Allowing idiots to vote based on sound bytes, flattery, and who they'd like to share a beer with has proven very disastrous. I can't think of a way to better encourage the average person to do more research, but it is absolutely vital that people do just that.
