  1. The idea of punishment is generally meant to correct improper behavior. You punish a child for stealing to ensure they don't steal, for example. When it comes to prison sentences, the improper behavior generally has been set and is usually unlikely to be corrected. Someone who enjoys raping people isn't going to stop wanting to do that. And so, prison, more than anything is to remove a dangerous person from the public to protect society. If you want that person to suffer, you're not much better than the person you're putting in prison to begin with. If a person cannot be rehabilitated, let them live as happy a life as they can safely walled off in a prison. If they can be rehabilitated, do so and let them out to rejoin society and become a productive member.

  2. I would say that the appropriate time to stab a pedophile is exclusively in the middle of raping or attempting to rape a child. Any time before or after is not. Before, you get them counseling, possibly chemical castration to abate the inappropriate sexual interests. After, you convict them of the crime they committed and sentence them to prison. Anything else is a crime, and as the saying goes, two wrongs don't make a right.
