The idea that Pence was going to reject one or more slate of electors wasn't to actually win the presidency for Trump, it was to sow enough chaos for Trump's confederates to find a way to steal the election. Through legal means, like getting the Supreme Court involved, or very much illegal means, such as the coup attempt he fomented January 6th. On that, Mike Pence cleared the lowest sitting-on-the-floor bar of political respectability, and forever tainted himself in MAGA's eyes.
