If Nixon had been actually punished for his criminality in office, we wouldn't be where we are today. The stink of such a conviction would have clung to the party for a generation making Regan unelectable, meaning all the economic and cultural shifts his administration was in charge of wouldn't have been made. Finally, the idea that a president isn't above punishment would likely have kept any candidate or holder of the office to be more careful. A Donald Trump might still have gotten into office but wouldn't have lasted very long.
