They're using the word research the way they would have in school when doing a research paper. Essentially, they are reading other people's information (erroneous or otherwise), collating it, and presenting it to others. In that way, they are correct. The issue is, it's totally uncritical. The papers you'd do in school would need sources cited and misinformation would result in a bad grade. Most people, even the ones that are on our side, are typically lazy thinkers. So, I'm not surprised by this phenomenon.

@johnwebster76 In science, a theory is damned near a fact, as close as one can get at least.

The formal comes from to search with vigor or intent, the unformal comes to search what other people already have found.
