  1. Our system, love it or hate it, is built as a two-party system. You only very occasionally get a third-party candidate make it into lower offices, maybe getting as high as senator or representative. I would say unfortunately, a president needs more than just the support of their voters. With the duopoly built as it is, they also need the party to support them. But let's say Cornel West or any other independent somehow becomes president, that president will be instantaneously a lame duck. Neither party would want to work with them because an independent president would signal a loss of their power, so they will begin wielding their power far more judiciously. The two parties might even work together, but it would be to scuttle everything the independent president would want to see done. Your choices are clear, sanity and Joe Biden or chaos and Donald Trump.
