There are people who live by the mantra that, "my opinions are fact, but your facts are just your opinion." While I believe many people have been poorly educated on what is and is not a fact, I strongly suspect that there are just as many who do know the difference but intentionally ignore this for the sake of their ideology. A lot of it is due to religion, people believing what has been pointed out as false. The world wasn't created in 6 days, it took billions of years. There was no global flood. Life wasn't created, it evolved. But, because their religion tells them the opposite, and tells them only their religion is truth, they have to ignore reality else their religion would evaporate.
