  1. This is the same kind of math retail uses to trick people into buying items that are on sale. "50% off!" Yeah, but the increased the price by a fair amount first, or the original price they claim was never the price it sold for. J.C. Penny used to do that a lot, tell you they were selling a pair of jeans for 50% off, now $25, but they NEVER sold the jeans at $50. People fall for this sort of math because they're just poorly educated on math.
