  1. There are a ton of individual reasons and a few general trends. The general trend is primarily ideological and political separation of information consumption. Before Fox News became a major and very partisan news source, things weren't perfect, but they were basically functional. Even the most radical Republican operative couldn't spread the level of disinformation that the most milquetoast Republican today can.
