This guy SOUNDS smart, but the amount of rampant supposition going on here is baffling. This entire discussion fails Occam's Razor, because they are making WAY too many assumptions. Even if it's true that only carbon based life that breathes oxygen, drinks water, and lives in "the goldilocks zone" can exist (an assumption) and if these intelligent lifeforms develop at a nearly constant rate (yet another assumption), then even logic hits like a ton of bricks. Let's say (assumption again) that there are 10,000 intelligent civilizations in out galaxy right now and they're all equally spread across the galaxy, the distances between would take centuries for most of those civilizations' communications to reach Earth. No one has really sat down and puzzled out all the potential variables in order to determine the likelihood of intelligent life developing, because the variables would be almost infinite to try and calculate.
