This question exposes the Democrats' Achilles heel. The Republicans are focused both on short-term gains and long-term power. Democrats seem to be only focused on the short-term gains and lose sight of the long-term power. Getting people in is only ever step one, and people think that, because we can't get everything we want all at once, taking that step isn't worth it. We need to have those short-term gains so that we can start planning for the long haul, accumulating the kind of power that allows us to push the system forward and make progress for the benefit of all people.
