Politics have become nasty as of late. Not that it was ever clean, but it's worse. I think a lot of the reason is for the effect of people checking out of politics. The, "I don't like politics," crowd are people who either don't vote or don't pay attention and vote for whomever is already in power. That's a massive boon for the conservative movement. The fewer people voting, the better for them.
