  1. They can't assimilate because they see themselves as the default. Any attempt to disabuse them of that notion will fail. Most immigrants assimilate far more in spite of their different cultures, religions, and languages because they want a piece of that American Dream. Conservative Nationalists can only see the nation on their terms and are simply blind (either willfully or not) to the difficulties and harm they are causing this nation with their actions and rhetoric. As Jean-Paul Sartre put it, "Hell is other people."
