I took debate in high school. It was structured, research was done ahead of the debate, and the goal was getting to the truth. Nearly every single debate I've seen made for public consumption were either one or both parties being greatly uninformed and the goal being to score points or persuade people with disinformation or one genuine party looking to inform and a severely disingenuous party looking to muddy the waters. I've LONG since given up on debate as a means of discerning what the truth is, they can't even distinguish what a fact is much less agree on what the facts are.
