Elon Musk made his fortune starting with money he got from his wealthy father, owner of a slave labor emerald mine, helping create a start-up that got bought out by Pay-Pal and then Pay-Pal was bought by Ebay. That job, he was fired from it for gross incompetence. If they bought him out of his stock options on the way out, he wouldn't have ever bought out the business that became Tesla, a business he managed to get overvalued. He'd be rich, not cartoonishly super wealthy.
