  1. Ha! Ask the Christian churchgoers of the 1300s if the "blood of Jesus" was protecting them from the Bubonic Plague. It killed nearly HALF of Europe at the time, and two of the major reasons why were people with religious delusion. One, religious superstition made people kill cats as "familiars of the devil," which allowed the rodent population to grow unchecked and the infected fleas they carried bit people And two, they thronged into churches, concentrating exposure. Doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past indeed.
