I would suggest the university heads acting the way they did and refusing to outright demand calls for the genocide of Jews being forbidden is a terrible case of lawyer brain. They've slipped into the mindset of defending their client (the university) and not having the wherewithal to get outside that mindset and think it through logically. It's bad, yes, I'm not sure it was malicious.
