There's a saying that all politicians lie. I'd like to say something more nuanced. All politicians say things that later prove to be untrue. What's the difference? When you say things are lies, you're not just saying it's untrue but that the person telling them are intentionally misrepresenting something untrue as the truth. Often, what happens with politicians is that they genuinely want to make something happen. Then, after a lot of political wrangling, they either fail to deliver or what they deliver falls short of expectations. Neither of these are lies, more like broken promises which isn't great, but isn't always the politician's fault. The fact is there are more half-truths and minor hedges spoken by politicians than actual bold face lies. I would contend that is worse though. It primed people to become more partisan, more divided, more willing to accept full falsehoods, and more willing to accept radical ideologies.
