The entire idea behind tariffs isn't to punish the foreign goods producer, it's to make said foreign good less attractive. If two equivalent items are being sold, one foreign produced and one domestically produced, and you put a tariff on the foreign product thus making it more expensive, the domestic good is more likely to be purchased and the money is kept here instead of going overseas. VERY simple idea. The only, and I mean ONLY, reason people don't understand this is because of intentional misrepresentation. They know how tariffs work, but they also know we aren't going to be producing the goods we're buying cheap overseas. So, to soothe angry consumers, they sprinkle in disinformation to keep them happy and spending their money.

@florianh.5135 Can't cure stupid, but you can cure ignorance. I've always, in my mind at least, separated a lack of intelligence from stupidity. The former is inherent, the latter is willful. People choosing not to understand will never. Like a stubborn ass (donkey), they've dug their feet in and refuse to budge. Most people aren't really stupid, they're being led by stupid people. A massive dose of truth can fix it, but it needs to be hard, fast, and relentless.

@florianh.5135 There's a wide gap between lip service and actuality. If you told me about 5 years ago (I forget when the first accusations became public) that Bill Cosby was a rapist, I'd have called you an idiot. The all the proof came out. My mind might have seemed made up, but then reality crashed through the wall like the Kool-Aid man. They haven't left fantasy land yet. Wait until reality hits them hard and THEN ask them what they think. Everyone has a limit, even cult members can be disabused of their beliefs.
