There are different breeds of conservative. You have your reactionary conservatives, constantly afraid of being oppressed and they read equality as oppression. There are the "back in my day" conservatives who just can't accept any sort of change, good or bad and want to drag everyone back to where they're most comfortable. Then there are conservatives who recognize and understand that things change, and their job is to slow things down so we aren't rushing into changes that might be bad overall. That last group has become few and far between. By that right, the Democratic party is marginally that sort of conservative.
