The issue with autism is that there are dozens of unrelated conditions grouped together under it as an umbrella term. There are severe and debilitating conditions most would call an illness, there are just people with slightly different neurology and can function just fine, and everything in between. People hear autism and think of Dustin Hoffman in Rainman, one of the more debilitating forms of autism not their cousin Steve who everyone in the family calls "quirky."

@ The issue is one of ignorance and misinformation/disinformation. Like most things, neurological function is a spectrum. Most people are in the middle of the bell curve, what most might refer to as neurotypical. The further people get from the mode, the less average people will understand. I’ve known several people on the autism spectrum. Like everyone, what they need most is understanding. The only cure for ignorance is information. I get how exhausting it can be to have to inform others of your needs so they don’t look at you as a disease. Patience is hard to come by. So, how about a different perspective. The patience you want for your needs, extend to others when they fail in their understanding. After all, they are suffering from the same condition we all are, ignorance. They might even end up helping later, spreading awareness. One can hope at any rate.
