yup my first year at college ( 1979) we used punch cards for computer classes. by 4th year it had all been replaced by a VAX and a bunch of terminals .

we buy plcs and other automation equipment . we don't get down to the chips. we just need plc's . everything is backordered for months/ years. we go online and try to order . suppliers has 2500 or so on order from the manufacturer but are only getting like 100 every few months. none of these chips are leading edge. so we are fucked i guess.

no it's the lack of education of the media. they don't know anything about science or engineering . how many breakthrough stories do we get where they say we have cured cancer yet the truth is completely different when you find out about the details.

today's young people all just want unlimited money with no effort. social media is cancer. they support high wages but bitch and complain about prices of goods. if those goods didn't come from china they would cost double. the high inflation is overwhelmingly caused by the wage increases that have been happening in blue collar. they expect months of paid vacation because they are special. maybe we need to just tell illegals you can came here if you go work blue collar because no else wants to do it.

making chips the workers are underpaid and work long hours. i don't see europeans doing that particularly the dutch. they are always on holiday and taking days off.

china has built 500 cities in 20yrs . they are full of high rises buildings. since heat rises, without air conditioning life in a highrise would be near unbearable . so it's not all just global warming. also why do they not invest in nuclear power which has no carbon emissions or air pollution.? i heard they are working on thorium reactors. if they can crack it it would be almost ideal . not much radioactivity at the end and not for long periods.

there was a great book i read in grade school back in the 60's that was the story of the first successful trans atlantic cable. the book was actually riveting , at least to me it was. i recall Brunel built the ship The Great Eastern the biggest ship in the world at the time. after he died the ship was adapted to lay the first trans atlantic telephone cable.

maybe yes maybe no. because flat screens are light and can fit on a wall many more are used for things like information display or just a display where a crt would be too big or heavy. we have a bunch of them in our factory for displaying things like schedule which used to be done with a whiteboard.
