I suspect the problem has more to do with lack of physical activity than diet. When I was a kid most kids walked to school, often for miles (my walk was about 2 miles, but many were further) and weekends, my friends and I would be out and about on our bikes all day. Kids now are buried in their smartphones and get driven to school. My diet was nothing special, mainly something with chips - beef burgers, fish fingers etc. with peas or beans.

A few years ago, my daughter and I were waiting at Gard du Nord in Paris waiting for our EuroStar back to London. We were in a cafe overlooking the new arrivals. For fun I made up a game of ‘Guess the Nationality’. The differences were startlingly obvious between American, British and French families, it was hilarious.

Dwarf Wheat happened. Mexico became a net exporter of wheat by 1963. Between 1965 and 1970, wheat yields nearly doubled in Pakistan and India. Their book was obsolete before it was published.

In the US: Obesity has increased from 30% to 42% since 2000. Severe obesity has increased from 5% to 9%. That’s around 50+ pounds overweight and the severely obese are by definition not remotely ‘fit’.
