When an expert (Susan Crockford) stated that polar bears were doing fine regardless of climate change, she was immediately fired from her job.

To be fair, steps were taken to massively reduce sulphur emissions from power stations. In the U.K. now, only 2.4% of electricity is generated from coal, they use low-sulphur coal, and they filter the exhaust gases. (Plus hardly anyone heats their houses using coal anymore). Lichen, which is very sensitive to acid rain, can now be found growing on most roofs.

@williamtell6750 Acid rain lands downwind of the source, the U.K. sulphur emissions were causing acid rain in Scandinavia. The main panic was back in the 80s and steps have been taken to reduce the problem. The fact remains that Petroleum and other fossil fuels are the main sources of energy in Switzerland (50.6%).

@elbuggo Whether you call it a ‘hole’ or not, increasing skin cancers by 40% is a bad idea.
2
@chasleask8533 I didn’t say it never happened, but to claim it happens all the time is simply wrong.

@williamtell6750 what part of ‘most of your energy comes from fossil fuels’ do you not understand?

@jasoncdebussy I listed them in my comment, you obviously didn’t scroll down far enough.

@jasoncdebussy so you didn’t see... “In the U.K. now, only 2.4% of electricity is generated from coal, they use low-sulphur coal, and they filter the exhaust gases”.
1
@jasoncdebussy so you can’t see my comment?: “To be fair, steps were taken to massively reduce sulphur emissions from power stations. @jasoncdebussy If you’d bothered to read the ongoing conversation then you would have seen what actions were taken. I’m no longer remotely interested in carrying on this ridiculous nonsense. You’re blocked

@chasleask8533 maybe you should try actually reading the comments before dog piling and showing the world how little you understand?

@chasleask8533 In the UK the most common winds are from the west or south-west. Obviously they vary, but the overall majority is clear. You’re welcome to believe whatever you like, but the facts are clear, go look for yourself. If you’re on the coast you get a daily cycle of ‘sea breezes’ that are onshore in the day and offshore at night, your confusion is understandable.

@rainman4494 the hole was mainly over the South Pole so Australia was most affected. The dangers of UV and skin cancers are well established, are you denying they happen? They are now the commonest cancer with a lifetime risk of 2.5% for people with pale skin.
1
@elbuggo I made no claim about the cause. The fact remains that skin cancers have massively increased and taking sensible precautions like reducing exposure, using sun block and minimising damage to the ozone layer seem reasonable.
1
@chasleask8533 my point is that you claiming the prevailing wind in the U.K. North East is from the East is simply wrong. Just because you’ve anecdotally got a bit chilly at times does NOT make it the prevailing wind. Go look up the facts for yourself instead of spewing nonsense.

@SunofYork I specifically stated that coal use is down to 2.4% of electricity generation. The fact remains that BEFORE we moved to gas, the use of high sulphur coal was stopped, and the exhaust gases were scrubbed of sulphur dioxide. These actions reduced acid rain BEFORE the move to gas.
