  1. GPS was a logical progression of calculating the position of Sputnik. In 1957, William Guier and George Weiffenbach, at Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) decided to monitor its radio transmissions. They then realized that, because of the Doppler effect, they could pinpoint where the satellite was along its orbit. Given that the real position of the satellite is known, reversing the calculation gives your own position. Obviously, the BBC (and others) now attribute this work to Gladys West, even though the work she did on GPS was over a decade later. I think we can all guess the diverse nature of Gladys West.
