The colour is distinctive of ‘Kapton’ a DuPont product used for both wiring and PCBs due to its electrical conductivity and operating temperature range. It’s used in aircraft because of its low weight.

Tesla battery packs currently last over 500,000 files. The LFPs are likely to last well over 1,000,000 miles.

Cylinders enable better thermal management which prolongs the life of the battery. Two reasons spring to mind: 1) They’re clueless 2) They don’t care Elon Musk genuinely wants to try to help the planet transition away from fossil fuels. The other company directors only care about the next quarter’s earnings in my opinion.

Blanket statements like that are pretty stupid, the optimum level of serviceability will depend on the failure rate and cost and vary from component to component. My father had an electric kettle that cost today’s equivalent of £200, when the element blew after 3 years he replaced the element. My electric kettle has worked perfectly for over 15 years and cost £3, when it eventually breaks I’ll throw it away and buy another.

I believe the thermal management aspect is why Tesla prefer cylinders over ‘pouches’.

Great question, my understanding is that different cells can degrade at different rate, so they need smart charging down to the cell level. But I have no idea if anybody actually does that.
