Very few animals use IR, there’s reasons for that. Even the edge cases where normal vision has problems aren’t particularly solved by using IR.

Yes, totally. But if you make IR cameras, every application needs an IR camera!

Feel better now?... ...nobody cares about your opinion, it’s going to happen, go buy a horse.

@free_spirit1 I suspect you’re right, FLIR Is a solution looking for a problem, just like videophones and flying cars. Nearly everybody can now make video calls from their smartphones but in reality most people don’t bother. If everybody had a FLIR camera they’d use it for a day before they got bored.

Sure, let’s give a $10,000 FLIR body-cam to every policeman for the 5 times a year it might be useful.
2
@swissTom124 I’ve been driving for over 40 years, I’ve encountered plastic bags fewer than 10 times. When it’s been an option, I’ve simply stopped and waited. FLIR would not have changed anything.
2
No, actually very few animals use IR, listing the two animals you think you know and adding ‘and many’ doesn’t make it true... ...And (baby) salmon see into the UV (the exact opposite of IR).
2
@katiegreene3960 So less than 0.01% of species then 🤣.
2
If it was, they would. I’m guessing the cost/benefit for that is non-existent. You’re welcome to give examples.
2
You’re welcome to do your own startup in that area, if you’re right you should clean up and make a fortune.

If they weren’t, they wouldn’t need a cooling system. But I’m not convinced FLIR is particularly useful for FSD.
1
In thick fog, IR is no better than normal vision.
1
@DerKatzeSonne What part of ‘IR is no better’ do you not understand?
1
@DerKatzeSonne 🤣
1
@markplott4820 FLIR isn’t precision either. And it doesn’t solve anything anyway.
1
It is! 🤣
1
@glenng1304 Because RoboTaxis improve the utility of the cars making the number required much fewer, and effectively reducing the cost by amortising across more people (3x - 8x).
1
I agree, the only potential really is improving FSD and I’m doubtful about that.
1
Not as much.
1
The spectral range in IR is much less.
1
Maybe, while an attractive idea it’s not really clear how useful that is in terms of making a difference.
1
No
1
@morilot they have totally different spectral ranges.
1
Human binocular vision to calculate 3D is only effective out to around 10 feet. Beyond that our brains use other cues but it’s seamlessly subconscious so we don’t even think about it.
1
I don’t believe so, in theory they probably could but using the flir to aim a lidar would probably be more effective.
1
They have their niche, and their cashing in.
