His incident has to be the best recommendation for eye protection I’ve seen. From his description, had he not been wearing eye protection he would have probably lost an eye and possibly been instantly killed.

Interesting question, some ammo uses a discarding sabot and fin stabilisation in a smooth bore. Steyr do a sniper ‘rifle’ like this. They don’t call it a rifle, but the people who use it probably do 🤣

@IIxXKILLXxII Seems reasonable. The Serbu seems to me to be a budget gun for people desperate to fire a 50 but without the funds for other choices. Firing sabot ammo through a gun with a muzzle break seems like a bad idea unless the specifications state it’s safe to do so (which in this case I doubt).

The thread of the cap that blew off seemed rather fine in my opinion in comparison to the locking lugs on any AR variant.

Interesting point if true.

He said he was using old ammo because it was no longer being manufactured.

Interesting idea.

Great question.

Hard to say unless you’re a metallurgist. The process of reprofiling the case might make it more prone to failure. Over multiple reloads other problems could occur, but if it’s fully in-battery it shouldn’t be a problem. I’m guessing you’d need both a weakened case AND an out-of-battery to suffer a failure? Doing your own reloads saves a lot of money and sometimes new stock isn’t available. I think if I was doing my own reloads, I’d probably use reduced loads for range practice just to be on the safe side.

He’s been told the sight in his right eye should (eventually) return to normal.

Weighing each round individually the following day might be a good idea as well?

That isn’t the gun he was using.
