@TheWatchfulWolf ~ It never died out, but for decades it had few adherents. In the last two or three decades, the movement has had a resurgence. See also my reply in this thread for more info.

@jaycole5353 ~ It's a big grift that a bunch of suckers fall for because free DUMB! There's a whole bunch of different sects, some of the quite militant, some quite violent. This particular incident involved the group Rise of the Moors. Their ideology, if that's what it can be called, is especially crackpot. They are militant, but not known for violence. At least, they hadn't been known for violence. Those in the sovereign citizens movement are just another bunch of anarchists hiding behind Constitutional mumbo-jumbo, because they deem only their goofy interpretation of the Constitution and our laws valid. Hope you're not one of the suckers buying into the grift----or, worse yet, one of the grifters selling the poison----but it sound like you could be.

"Call this civic barbarism. Instead of promoting the values of responsible citizenship, Trump, Republican leadership, and their media enablers have elevated and blessed the very worst among us. They are making many Americans less suited for self-government and more dangerous to their neighbors. And they are doing so for the reason some of the Founders most feared: To lead the mob against true democracy." ~ Michael Gerson, from 'Trumpism is American Fascism'

@victoriawilliams2786 ~ That is the traditional definition. However the sovereign citizen movement is what this is about, who claim similar status for themselves. See my reply in this thread for more info.

@Lottie Lot ~ The FBI and organizations tracking hate groups classify Rise of the Moors as part of the sovereign citizens movement. They have been known to associate with other sovereign nationalists, and while their particular sect may have its own unique quirks and distinctions, their ideology is based largely upon sovereign nationalism. From the Southern Poverty Law Center, a leading organization tracking hate groups: "Sovereign citizens are a diverse group of individuals whose activities and motives vary, but whose core tenets are the typically the same. They view United States citizenship, established government, authority and institutions as illegitimate and consider themselves immune from and therefore above the law."
