Rick was like a kid with a brand new toy having Phil X in his studio: show us this, show us that, do that weird thing, interrupting him with another question or comment about his playing! Of course, it was all good; Phil appreciated others appreciating his talent and musicality, taking no offense whatsoever. For us spectators, the whole thing was quite amusing and groovy to watch! Definitely one of your top episodes, Rick! THANX!

Some of her songs aren't my cup of tea, but her amazing powerful vocals on songs like this one really do set her and the song apart. Though it is a good song, great arrangement, great production. Somebody else pointed out in another comment here the musicality and perfect pitch she has--an accurate assessment, and a big part of what makes her vocals so exceptional, IMHO.

Love 'NIB,' but 'Into the Void' is also a great example of Butler's talent.

@Rex-dk1rx ~ Gomm is also a virtuoso on guitar, but I agree. It's not all about speed and technical proficiency; what is most important is the music. As a rough analogy, have tremendous respect for Eddie Van Halen, enjoy his work, but much prefer listening to Jimmy Page. It isn't just that Page had a better band, or was a wizard in his arrangements and in the studio, or produced better and more varied songs, although those things all play a part, but also in how he played and used the guitar. Of course, music is subjective, and I'm sure there are some head-bangers out there who would disagree, but hopefully you get the general idea.

@The_Deliberate_Photograph ~ The Italian fingerpicking acoustic guitarist, Luca Stricagnoli, had learned and then given up guitar, but was inspired by Andy McGee to return to the instrument. He has since surpassed Andy in ability, innovating new techniques and inventing a number of unique guitar instruments that he plays in accompaniment. Love 'Drifting,' it's a beautiful song. Check out Stricagnoli's version of 'Sweet Child of Mine' sometime. Jon Gomm and Marcin are also next level virtuosos worth checking out.

@Rex-dk1rx ~ Would agree that Jon Gomm is better than Mike. But find Marcin even better on fingerpicking acoustic guitar. Still, for overall musicianship, would judge Gomm better than Marcin because of his superb vocal and songwriting abilities. I do prefer Marcin over Dawes, though. I also like Calum Graham from Canada, he has some great original songs, even if he's not quite the guitar virtuoso as some others. Check out his cover of Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean' that he plays on harp guitar sometime. There's also another excellent acoustic guitarist similar to Gomm, Marcin and Dawes who is out of Ohio and quite good, too, but the name escapes me at the moment.

So many great Who songs, and this is definitely one of their best. Love the way Rick appreciates all those beautiful buildups and euphoric climaxes the same way I do. It's what makes their music so good, along with the tremendous amount of talented musicians present in the band, so tight, with such great tone.

Few people would call Gordon Lightfoot a blues artist, his genre is generally regarded as folk-pop, but his songs are more bluesy than those produced by most blues artists. Pardon the pun, but I think that is why Lightfoot's music strikes a chord with me and so many other people. It's perhaps no coincidence that Beato and his brother were drawn to the same element of a song that I was at that age, which is the apex of a song. It is the apex, and the emotion that it is able to convey, which is a big part of what makes a song great -- at least for me.

Right with you, Rhett--Sabbath is definitely my favorite heavy metal band. Not only the great, unique sound of Iommi's guitar and amp, but Geezer's sublime bass, Ozzy's passionate vocals, the tight drum work--and so many really great songs. Zeppelin is probably my favorite rock-'n-roll band, but never considered them to be a heavy metal band like Sabbath, rather more diverse and blues oriented, capable of belting out great heavy metal. Black Sabbath's softer instrumentals, like 'Solitude,' have always found quite special, as well. The only fault ever had with Sabbath is Iommi's lead parts can sometimes be a bit aimless, disjointed from the song, and overdone. Like lead guitar that can take you away, tells a story, is more melodic. Felt Iommi didn't always succeed in capturing or holding one's interest with his leads on some of their songs, while still enjoying the song overall.

My favorite aunt taught piano. She died in middle age from lupus. This brings back fond memories, Rick. So sorry for your devastating loss. Take hope; those memories don't die, helping to sustain us.

As a rocker and a guy, never cared much for ballads like this, used to kind of cringe when forced to listen to them (most of the girls back then were crazy about songs like this). But take away the vocals (nothing against the vocal talent displayed), and I did like the instrumental part of this particular song, as the jazz progressions were kind of mellow and soothing, yet uplifting. Of course, like you, never imagined, understood, or appreciated the complexity of the composition of this song.

So many great Floyd songs, and 'Comfortably Numb' surely has to rank as one of their very finest, if not their best. 'Marooned' is another of my favorites, and would love to hear Rick's take on that song!

That's because you've been playing guitar for 40 years! OK, just kidding, but there may be some truth to that if you play electric guitar and play it loud. I play electric, and I could hear the subtle differences. It was more noticeable on some of the amps. Turning down the voltage really did sweeten the sound a bit. Now, wouldn't personally rush out and buy a Variac and take a chance on damaging my amp, because I just play for my own pleasure, anyway, but got no problem with others who got the wherewithal, need, and/or desire to obtain a better sound of their rig.
