  1. That's because you've been playing guitar for 40 years! OK, just kidding, but there may be some truth to that if you play electric guitar and play it loud. I play electric, and I could hear the subtle differences. It was more noticeable on some of the amps. Turning down the voltage really did sweeten the sound a bit. Now, wouldn't personally rush out and buy a Variac and take a chance on damaging my amp, because I just play for my own pleasure, anyway, but got no problem with others who got the wherewithal, need, and/or desire to obtain a better sound of their rig.
