Captain Beefheart has ALWAYS been an acquired taste. And he was responsible for the British post-punk/art rock scene a whole decade later! Without Beefheart we wouldn't have Gang of Four, the Mekons, etc. One of the few (only?) accessible albums he ever recorded was his 1967 debut "Safe As Milk" (now Rock n Roll slang for musicians too afraid to take chances!). That would be the LP to start with...
